Indonesia’s Sumatra Island was struck by tragedy as torrential rains unleashed flash floods and a landslide, leaving a trail of destruction and claiming the lives of at least 18 individuals. The disaster, which occurred in Pesisir Selatan regency of West Sumatra province, prompted the evacuation of approximately 46,000 people, with rescue efforts ongoing amidst challenging conditions.
The aftermath of the calamity revealed a grim toll, with 18 individuals confirmed dead and five still missing, as reported by Doni Gusrizal, acting head of the Pesisir Selatan disaster mitigation agency. In addition to the loss of lives, the disaster wreaked havoc on infrastructure and communities, with reports indicating the burial of at least 14 houses under landslides, widespread flooding affecting over 20,000 households, and the collapse of eight bridges. The neighboring Padang Pariaman regency also faced the brunt of heavy downpours, resulting in floods and landslides that claimed three lives.
