Fabien Fryns, a Belgian-born art lover and visionary, has spent nearly four decades shaping the global art world. From his teenage days collecting big names like Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat to becoming a leading art advisor and gallery founder, Fabien’s journey is all about passion, perseverance, and building bridges across cultures.
Today, based in Beijing since 2004, he stands as one of the most influential promoters of contemporary Chinese art, introducing new talents to collectors and museums worldwide.
Early Passion: A Teen with Big Dreams
Fabien Fryns’s story started in Belgium, where he grew up with a keen eye for beauty and creativity. At only 17, he made a bold move, he used $3,000 of his savings to buy a Basquiat on paper. While his friends were thinking about gadgets or cars, Fabien was already dreaming about art that could change the world.

He went on to study at Le Rosey in Switzerland and Christie’s Education in London, where he gained formal knowledge of art history. But his true education came from his fearless spirit and willingness to take risks.

A Smart Blend of Art and Business
After completing his studies at the European Business School in London, Fabien launched his first gallery, F2 Gallery, in Marbella in 1994. This wasn’t just a business move it was a creative mission.
Fabien didn’t stop at opening a gallery; he also launched a cultural center in partnership with a private bank, showing his unique ability to mix business intelligence with deep artistic passion.
A New Chapter in China
In 2000, Fabien Fryns saw a photograph that completely changed his path. It was a powerful piece by a Chinese artist that sparked his curiosity and admiration for China’s contemporary art scene.
By 2004, he took a huge leap of faith and moved to Beijing. In 2005, he opened F2 Gallery in the Caochangdi art district, becoming one of the first Western gallerists to fully embrace the Chinese art movement.
Fabien helped bring Western art to Chinese audiences and also introduced Chinese artists to the world. His work opened doors for many young creators who are now internationally known.
Deep Bonds with Artists
Fabien Fryns isn’t just a collector or dealer. He believes in building real relationships with artists. He buys their works early, supports them through ups and downs, and grows with them over the years.
For example, his close bond with the famous painter Zeng Fanzhi led to many international exhibitions and helped Zeng become a household name in contemporary art. Fabien’s support goes beyond money — it’s about believing in an artist’s vision and helping them share it with the world.
Growing Beyond Gallery Walls
From 2005 to 2012, F2 Gallery expanded to Los Angeles and continued to grow in Beijing. But after 2012, Fabien shifted his focus from running galleries to advising collectors directly.
Today, he helps collectors across Europe, China, and even the Middle East build meaningful collections. His approach is always about connection, discovery, and cultural exchange, rather than just buying for investment.
Heart Over Hype: A Unique Philosophy
Fabien’s philosophy is simple but powerful: buy with your heart, not with your ears. He avoids trends and refuses to buy art just because it’s popular. Instead, he listens to his intuition and supports artists who truly move him.
This patience and dedication set him apart in an art world often obsessed with quick profits and hype. For Fabien, art is not a stock to trade it’s a lifelong companion.
An Impressive, Ever-Growing Collection
Fabien’s personal collection is vast and diverse. He owns between 500 and 600 artworks, including paintings, sculptures, installations, and more.
He keeps these pieces between his homes in Beijing and Spain. While storage is a constant challenge, he dreams of one day gathering his entire collection in one place where it can be shared and enjoyed together.
Sharing Art with the World
Fabien believes art should be shared, not hidden away. He often lends works from his collection to museums and public exhibitions. One example is his recent acquisition of a large installation by Li Wei, which he plans to lend to a contemporary art museum in Málaga, Spain.
He also actively supports young and emerging artists from around the world, collecting works from new names and helping them gain global attention.
Celebrating Triumphs and Staying Grounded
Fabien has experienced many proud moments throughout his career, like seeing his artists succeed internationally or watching an exhibition he organized come to life.
But he also warns against treating art purely as an investment. He believes that patience, love, and a genuine connection to the work are what make a great collection. For Fabien, true happiness comes from seeing artists grow and watching people connect deeply with the pieces he loves.
A Legacy of Connection and Courage
Over the years, Fabien has organized more than 300 exhibitions worldwide, including major institutional shows that introduced Chinese contemporary art to Western audiences.
His mission goes beyond selling and buying. He acts as a cultural ambassador, building bridges between East and West, and encouraging people to discover art with an open mind and heart.
