22 Killed and Numerous Injured in Lewiston, Maine Shootings

Lewiston, Maine, witnessed a horrifying shooting spree that claimed the lives of at least 22 people and left many more injured on Wednesday evening. 

According to local authorities, the gunman responsible for the attacks remains large.

The violent incidents unfolded at various places in Lewiston, including a bowling alley and a local restaurant and bar. 

The death toll has risen to 22, with many others sustaining injuries, as confirmed by City Councilor Robert McCarthy.

Local law enforcement released a photograph of the suspected shooter, who was seen inside the bowling alley carrying what appeared to be a semi-automatic weapon. 

The authorities are urging anyone with information on the shooter’s identity to come forward.

Description of Suspect and Vehicle:

The suspect, described as a bearded man in a brown top, blue pants, and brown shoes, is being actively sought by the police. 

They also shared an image of a white SUV and requested the public’s help identifying the vehicle, noting that its front bumper might have been painted black.

The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department revealed that they are investigating two active shooter events and have advised local businesses to lock down or close during the ongoing investigation. 

The suspect remains at large, raising concerns within the community.

Response from Authorities:

The White House reported that President Joe Biden has been briefed on the situation. Maine Governor Janet Mills is also aware of the active shooter situation and has been briefed.

According to CNN, at least 50 to 60 people were injured in the incidents, although it remains unclear how many injuries resulted from gunfire. 

The situation has caused significant uncertainty and distress among the residents.

A Series of Shootings:

The shooting incidents unfolded as police and rescuers responded to an active shooter at the Sparetime Recreation bowling alley around 7:15 pm local time. 

Subsequently, reports of another shooting at the Schemengees Bar & Grille emerged. At 8:15 p.m., another shooting was reported at a local Walmart distribution center.

Local Congressman’s Reaction:

Maine Congressman Jared Golden expressed his horror over the events and emphasized that the community looks to local law enforcement for control of the situation and information gathering. He extended his sympathy to those affected by the tragedy.

Persistent Issue of Gun Violence:

The United States continues to grapple with the persistent issue of gun violence, with over 500 mass shootings recorded this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive. 

Efforts to implement stricter gun controls face resistance in a country where gun ownership is deeply rooted in its culture.

Lewiston, the second most populous city in Maine, is facing an immense tragedy, and the community’s hearts go out to the victims and their families as they await answers.
